Liquid Hero Brewery What the Floc, a 9.5% ABV 120ish IBU Double IPA
Appearance | Brilliant gold color; fluffy white head; tons of bubbles. |
Aroma | Citrus and pine; subtle malt sweetness. |
Taste | Super sweet malt flavors up front; lingering hop bitterness. |
Mouthfeel | Light-bodied; moderate carbonation. |
Overall | Hop-forward aroma; malt-forward flavor. The alcohol is well hidden. A bit sweet for my taste, but the bitterness lingers, not the sweetness. |
Liquid Hero is the brainchild of homebrew buddies Josh Hoke, Matt DePrato, and Christian Quinlivan. The idea struck them while homebrewing back in 2008. The trio formed an LLC in early 2010, signed a lease in January 2011, and brewed the first batch of commercial beer that August. The name Liquid Hero was created during a conversation when Hoke proclaimed, “Beer is my liquid hero.”
The brewery is a small scale microbrewery located in downtown York, PA. The custom built, electric-fired 5 barrel brewing system with combination mash/lauter tun was a welcome expansion from the homebrew system in the garage. In addition there are four 15-barrel and two 7-barrel fermenters, and the majority of the beers are kegged.
Hopheads will love What the Floc. The Double IPA is heavily hopped with Cascade, Nugget, Simcoe, Centennial, Chinook, and Columbus hops. The huge hop profile is balanced by a big malty backbone. The brew is named after the expression the yeast gives when it first encounters the high-octane wort. What the Floc is one of Liquid Hero’s brews that are available in cans.
