Dock Street Brewery started in 1985 as one of the first post-prohibition craft breweries in the country – and Philly’s first all-grain brewpub. To this day, countless craft beer drinkers credit Dock Street as the beer that turned them away from yellow-tinged macro-brews and corn-infused light lager that defined beer at the time.
Now, Dock Street calls a beautiful old firehouse at 50th and Baltimore Avenue in West Philadelphia home, and one of the original founders, Rosemarie Certo, heads up operations. She’s one of the few female brewery owners in the country.
Dock Street is known as much for staples like the Rye IPA and Bohemian Pilsner and seasonal styles such as Prince Myshkin Russian Imperial Stout, one of the highest rated beers out there, as they are for fearless experimental beers like the Walker (brewed with goat brains in honor of their favorite show, The Walking Dead). Dock Street keeps things weird with ingredients like wild yeasts and bacteria, fresh fruits and veggies, chocolate, coffee, spices, teas, various wine and spirit barrels, brains (once), Himalayan Pink Salt, and even the musical stylings of Wu Tang Clan.
Summer in Berlin is Dock Street’s sour twist on their beloved Summer Session. The ‘Philly Style’ Berliner Weisse was brewed with fresh lemongrass and fresh ginger. This tart, sessionable beer begs for hot weather. Summer in Berlin opens up with a refreshing lactic punch that melds beautifully with grassy citrus notes and finishes with a subtle ginger spice. Your new favorite summer beer. Repeat.
