Steph’s New Brew Review: Smoked Red Ale

Steph’s New Brew Review: Smoked Red Ale

West O Beer Smoked Red Ale, a 6.5% ABV Red Ale

Appearance Clear, dark amber color with fluffy tan head.
Aroma Strong roasted malt aroma, herbal, hints of smoke.
Taste Deep, rich roasted malts, touch of smoke at the end and a dry, herbal finish.
Mouthfeel Medium-bodied, moderate carbonation.
Overall This is not a “smoke beer.” It is a pleasant malt-forward red ale with hints of smoke. Tasty and drinkable, this beer is sure to please!

West O Beer is a 6,000 square foot craft microbrewery located just south of West Okoboji Lake in the city of West Okoboji, Iowa.

Beer is available in pints and half-gallon growlers through their 1,800 square foot tasting room, which features bar, table, and sofa seating in a casual atmosphere. Kegs and bottles are available through numerous retail outlets in Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota.

In October 2014, West O Beer received a Gold Medal at the Great American Beer Festival for West O CocO™ Stout, a 6.0% ABV milk stout. Real cocoa nibs, bourbon vanilla beans, imported sugar, and caramel all combine for a complex, yet balanced milk stout. There is a mild chocolate flavor with hints of vanilla, oats, and subtle coffee.

Another delicious brew from West O Beer, Smoked Red Ale, boasts roasted malts giving nutty flavors mixed with caramelly dark fruit. You’ll notice hints of forest and campfire. Perfect way to end a summer day as you watch the stars and listen to the crackle of the campfire.
