Lagunitas Brewing Company Lagunitas Sucks, 8% ABV 63.21 IBU Imperial IPA
Appearance | Clear, bright orange; fluffy white head. |
Aroma | Bright aromas of pine, citrus, tropical fruits. |
Taste | Juicy citrus, tropical fruit notes with resinous pine supported by a subtle malt cushion. |
Mouthfeel | Medium-bodied; medium carbonation. |
Overall | The bitterness is apparent, but not overly aggressive, making this a super easy-drinking beer. This continues to be one of my favorite IPAs ever. |
Lagunitas Sucks was first brewed back in 2011 as an emergency replacement for the winter seasonal, Brown Shugga’ Ale. Due to a mistake in the brewing schedule, Brown Shugga’ was not released that year. The Sucks label included an apology from the brewery.
While awaiting the delivery of a new brewhouse, the brewing team was brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILS every 3 hours to keep up with demand.
It was too late when they realized only 60 barrels of Brown Shugga’ could be brewed every 5 hours. For every case of Brown Shugga’ brewed, Lagunitas would be short 3 cases of the daily beers.
The solution was to brew a Brown Shugga’ Substitute Ale, a complex yet drinkable beer brewed with a medley of barley, rye, wheat, and oats then dry-hopped for a big, juicy hop aroma and resinous hop flavor.
Lagunitas Brewing Company’s main brewery is located in Petaluma, California. Due to rapid growth over the past few years, a new facility was added in Chicago. With the additional of the Chicago facility, both Brown Shugga’ and Sucks are brewed year-round.
