Cycle Brewing Company is one of the newest additions to the growing downtown Saint Petersburg, Florida craft beer scene. The craft brewery and tasting room, located on Central Avenue in downtown Saint Pete, opened in August 2013.
This new venture of founder and Head Brewer Doug Dozark of Peg’s Cantina has definitely been pleasing the beer-drinking locals. Doug Dozark’s parents Peg and Tony opened Peg’s Cantina in Gulfport, Florida. Doug brewed a range of beers for Peg’s, earning himself some serious attention in the process. He also worked at Cigar City Brewing Company in Tampa, Florida to perfect his craft. After searching for a space for two years, he finally opened Cycle Brewing Company in his hometown.
The inspiration for the name Cycle Brewing Company comes from Dorzark’s love for cycling and for the bicycle friendly nature of St. Petersburg. There is a bike rack inside the brewery, and several bicycles were parked outside on Central Avenue.
Dorzark, along with brew team Eric Trinosky and Kristina Kirk, brews about 500 barrels annually, offering a range of beer styles on tap, including many award winning creations. Most pints are $5, except on Tuesdays when all pints are just $4. They also offer free tastes of any beer on tap. The offerings during my visit included:
- Batch 22 – 5.0% ABV IPA
- Fixie – 4.7% ABV Session IPA
- Berry Best – 4.0% ABV Raspberry Florida Sour
- Cycle Path – 5.2% ABV India Pale Lager
- Bottom of the 9th – 5.0% ABV American Brown Ale
- Derailleur – 7.5% ABV Double IPA
- Cream & Sugar, Please – 5.0% ABV Coffee Porter
- Ducky’s Pils – 5.0% ABV Bohemian Pilsner
- Ryerish Red – 5.0% ABV Irish Red
- Crank – 6.0% ABV IPA
- Hashtag YOLO – 9.0% ABV Baltic Porter
- Patch Kit – 5.5% ABV Wheat Porter
Doug has been focusing on sessionable beers that are as flavorful as high-alcohol beers. Two session IPAs not on tap, but worth mentioning have been named two of the Top 50 session IPAs in the world on Ratebeer.com. Cycle’s Freewheel IPA is listed at #30 and Cycle’s Session IPA is listed at #36.
The cash only establishment also sells growlers to go in 32 ounce or one gallon sizes. The 32 ounce growlers are $5 for the glass bottle and $8 per fill (or only $5 on Mondays!). The gallon growlers are $8 for the glass and $25 per fill.
During my visit, I picked up a Crowler – a 32 ounce can to go. Cycle has become the third brewery in the state of Florida to sell Crowlers. Boynton Beach’s Due South Brewing Company and Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing Company also offer the kick ass cans to go.
Keep your eyes open for the elusive RareR DOS Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout, which will be available in bottles soon.
