It was a picture perfect spring day. Sun shining, temperature in the 80s, and blue skies. Perfect day for beer and goats!
The annual Sly Fox Bock Festival and Goat Race took place on Sunday, May 3, 2015. Over 3,000 people attended the event, which took place at the Sly Fox Brewing Company in Pottstown, PA instead of the Sly Fox Brewhouse & Eatery in Phoenixville, where it had been held for over a decade.
While Wally was first to cross the finish line during the final round, 1-year old Nubian goat Penny from Schuylkill County took home the gold. Unfortunately Wally was disqualified when his handler crossed the finish line before the goat.
Crowd favorite, three-legged Simon took home the bronze medal, making it the fifth year in a row one of Colin Presby’s three-legged goats ran in the final race. Peggy (who decided not to finish her first heat this year) won gold in 2011 and 2012, and Simon won gold in 2013.
After the final race, the ceremonial first keg of Penny Maibock was tapped on the stage with live German Oompah music playing.
A German menu was available along with a large selection of bock-style brews, including Slacker Bock, Hefeweizen Doppelbock, Helles Bock, Instigator Doppelbock, two Eisbocks, and the winner’s Maibock. Cans of Sly Fox brews were also available.
