Humboldt Brewing Company, located in Northern California, was founded in 1987. One of California’s pioneering microbreweries, the brewery has been independently owned by Total Beverage Solution and brewed on California’s Central Coast by Firestone Walker since 2000. The line-up of beers available from Humboldt include: Red Nectar, Nectar IPA, Humboldt Brown Hemp Ale and limited-release brews Black Xantus and 500 B.C. Double IPA.
Humboldt Brown (Hemp Ale) is brewed with toasted hemp seeds, not actual weed. Hemp, as defined by Wikipedia, is a commonly used term for varieties of the Cannabis plant and its products, which include fiber, oil, and seed.
Hemp strains have such low tetrahydrocannabinol content that it cannot affect any psychoactive behavior or have been bred to have the THC removed. Hemp is refined into products like hemp seed foods, hemp oil, wax, resin, rope, cloth, pulp, and fuel.
And, no, Humboldt is not breaking any laws by brewing Hemp Ale, and you are not breaking the law if you drink it! Humboldt assures you won’t get high, though you may get a little buzzed, but only from the alcohol.
Humboldt uses toasted hemp seeds to enhance the brew’s flavor, adding a unique, herb-accented flavor, perfectly balanced by American hops and darker malts. The beer won a bronze medal at the 2012 California State Fair, a silver medal at the 2009 California State Fair, and a gold medal at the 2009 LA County Fair.
