Anchor Brewing Company says that its fall seasonal, BigLeaf Maple Autumn Red™, was inspired by a native California tree, its incredible leaves, its delicious syrup, and the best colors of fall.
The unique bigleaf maple is native to California, growing along the banks of the mountain streams. At one time, the bark of the tree was used to make rope and baskets. Today, the wood and burl of the bigleaf maple are used to make custom guitars.
The tree is known for its huge leaves, which can grow up to one foot across, turning color from green to gold to red.
Bigleaf maple sugaring has occurred in California since the 1800s. A hint of the unusually flavorful bigleaf maple syrup is used in every brew of BigLeaf Maple Autumn Red™, making this American red ale quite unique.
BigLeaf Maple Autumn Red™ is a well-balanced ale. The malty complexity and coppery color result from the use of two caramel malts, pale malt, and a hint of maple syrup. Three additions of Nelson Sauvin hops are used, as well as a unique blend of Nelson Sauvin, Citra, and Cascade for dry hopping.
