Beer Thousand is the result of a collaboration between Dogfish Head Craft Brewery and indie legends Guided by Voices. The beer celebrates the 20th anniversary of the band’s classic album Bee Thousand. Coincidently, Dogfish Head will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year.
Lagers are rarely brewed at Dogfish Head, however there are special occasions when only a lager will do (apparently a crap load of lager was consumed during the recording of Bee Thousand). Beer Thousand is the “typical lager amplified by 10.”
Beer Thousand is a 10% ABV imperial lager brewed with 10 different grains and 10 different hop varieties sourced from all around the world. Do the math… 10 times 10 times 10 equals 1,000!
While Beer Thousand looks like a typical American lager and includes much of the light lager recipe of DNA, this brew is amplified like a barleywine. The aroma boasts fruity notes, while the flavor is sweet and malty. The brew finishes clean and warm.
Originally released in November 2014, Dogfish Head sold 1,000 cases of six 750 mL bottles. Each case included a record of 10 songs recorded June 25, 1994 during the “Insects of Rock” tour, Guided by Voices’ first tour. The remaining beer is being sold in 4-packs of 12-ounce bottles.
The ten grains included in the recipe are: 2-row pale malt, 6-row pale malt, Corn, Rice, Wheat, Dark Munich malt, Carapils malt, Light caramel malt, Dark caramel malt, and Flaked barley.
The ten hop varieties used during the brewing process are: Warrior, CTZ, Simcoe, Cluster, Galena, Galaxy, Centennial, Willamette, Cascade, and Vanguard.
