Portland, Oregon is regularly rated among America’s top craft beer cities. According to oregoncraftbeer.org, it’s estimated that 53% percent of all draft beer consumed in Oregon is brewed in Oregon. There are currently 58 breweries in Portland and 84 in the Portland metro area.

I recently had a chance to visit Portland, Oregon, and while I did not visit all 84 Portland-area breweries, I did manage to check out 14 stand out breweries.

Baerlic Brewing Company opened in summer 2014 on SE 11th Street in the Hosford-Abernathy neighborhood near Ladd’s Addition in Southeast Portland. The literal translation of baerlic (pronounced bear-lick) is ‘of barley’ in Old English. Their website explains that “baerlic reiterates the fundamental idea that all things, no matter how complex or involved, can always be traced backward to a single, simple core or point of view.”

Bar Gifts

Baerlic Brewing Company’s motto, which is painted on the wall behind the bar, reads “the beer here is near and dear.” Baerlic strives to work as close a proximity as possible to all ingredients, materials, vendors, supplies, and suppliers.

There are 10 beers on tap including lighter options like Cavalier Classic Cream Ale and East Side Oatmeal Pilsner to the expected hoppy options like Invincible IPA and Shop Class, a single hop Cascade IPA. Creative beers like Two’s Company, a brett pale ale celebrating Baerlic’s two year anniversary, and Nice & Easy, a salted oat gose, hit the spot.

Snacks like pork jerky, pretzels, mixed nuts, and popcorn are available for purchase. Visitors are encouraged to bring outside food or order in from other restaurants in the neighborhood.

Baerlic is open Monday to Thursday 4 to 10 PM, Friday 2 PM to midnight, Saturday noon to midnight, and Sunday noon to 9 PM. Happy Hour is 5 to 7 PM daily and all day on Tuesday. Beer can be purchased in 32- and 64-ounce growlers to go (their T-shirts are pretty awesome, too). Neighborhood street parking is available.
