I recently had a chance to visit Portland, Oregon, and while I did not visit all 84 Portland-area breweries, I did manage to check out 14 stand out breweries.
Breakside Brewery, an idea that began on a kayak trip in Alaska, is located in a unique neighborhood brewpub on Dekum Street in North Portland. In addition to this location, Breakside operates a 30 barrel production brewery in Milwaukie, OR.
In 2014 Breakside was awarded with the Gold Medal for American-Style IPA at the Great American Beer Festival for their flagship IPA, Breakside IPA. This beer was also named one of the 100 Best Beers In The World in Men’s Journal’s and the best beer in Oregon by The Oregonian.
In addition to Breakside IPA, other beers on tap include the Passionfruit Sour Ale, a German Berliner weisse-inspired beer conditioned on passionfruit; Toro Red, a rich amber ale with hints of smoke and spice; and the award-winning Wanderlust IPA, a golden IPA made with five different hops.
The food menu at Breakside Brewery include appetizers like Buffalo Chicken Nachos, Bavarian Pretzels, Fire Roasted Jalapeno Poppers, and Deep Fried Pickle Spears. Entrees include Mac & Cheese, Curry Fried Chicken, and Carne Asada Plate. Sandwiches include Grilled Portobella Sandwich, Spicy Grilled Cheese, Lovely Pork Belly Sandwich, and Smokey Cubano.
The brewpub is open Monday to Thursday 3 to 10 PM, Friday to Saturday 11:30 AM to 11 PM, and Sunday 11:30 AM to 10 PM. Beer can be taken home in growlers. Neighborhood street parking is available.
