Steph’s New Brew Review: Watermelon Dorado

Steph’s New Brew Review: Watermelon Dorado

Ballast Point Brewing Company Watermelon Dorado, 10% ABV Double India Pale Ale with Natural Flavors

Appearance Bright orange color; long-lasting off white head.
Aroma Watermelon followed by tropical fruit notes.
Taste Watermelon dominates at first, then the hops sneak in.
Mouthfeel Medium-bodied; moderate carbonation.
Overall Dangerously easy to drink for 10%. The hop punch reminds you this is no ordinary fruit beer.

Ballast Point Brewing Company has recently released new versions some of their most popular year-round offerings in 12-ounce bottles and some in cans. Pineapple Sculpin, Grapefruit Sculpin, Habanero Sculpin, and Mango Even Keel hit shelves a few weeks ago.

Watermelon Dorado, their imperial IPA brewed with watermelon, is also on that list of sought after beers.

Ballast Point adds hops to the 90 IBU Watermelon Dorado Double IPA during the mash, in the kettle, and the brew is dry hopped, creating a huge hop profile that is balanced with the flavor of watermelon. Ballast Point says this beer “is all summer and no seeds.”

Try pairing Watermelon Dorado with a Shrimp Po Boy, Pineapple Custard, or Asiago & Manchego Cheese.

There have been many other unique versions of Dorado released as “draft only” offerings at the Ballast Point locations in California. My favorite is brewed with Sansho Buttons, Szechwan peppercorns, and dried ghost peppers. Cheers!
