Steph’s New Brew Review: Toaster Pastry

21st Amendment Brewery Toaster Pastry, a 7.6% ABV India-style Red Ale

Appearance Deep amber color; fluffy off-white head.
Aroma Biscuity malt notes with a sweet, fruity undertone. Herbal, fruity hop notes sneak in to create a pretty convincing fresh strawberry preserve aroma.
Taste Earthy, fruity hop notes balanced by sweet, biscuity malts.
Mouthfeel Medium-bodied; moderate carbonation.
Overall Delicious beer! Love the nod to one of my favorite childhood breakfast treats.

Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan founded 21st Amendment Brewery in the South Park neighborhood of San Francisco, CA in 2000.

Located just a few blocks from the Giants ballpark, 21st Amendment offers a variety of tasty beers to locals and tourists alike.

The brewery’s name pays homage to the passage of the 21st Amendment, which repealed Prohibition. In 1920.

Prohibition had wiped out the beer culture that was sweeping America at the turn of the 20th century. For 13 years, this culture was forced underground to speakeasies until the amendment passed in 1933.

Back in August 2015, 21st Amendment held an opening party for their new San Leandro facility. The new 95,000-square-foot brewery will include a production line that will fill up to 500 cans a minute.

The party featured the release of their newest creation, Toaster Pastry. The India Red Ale pays homage to Pop Tarts since the new facility was previously a Kellogg factory, where the toaster pastry was once made.

The beer features biscuit malts for a slightly nutty, crust-like flavor, while pale and dark crystal malts create a strawberry jam-like flavor and mouthfeel. The hop bite comes from Calypso and other experimental hops.

Cheers to the continued success and growth of 21st Amendment!
