Steph’s New Brew Review: Sweet Baby Jesus

DuClaw Brewing Company’s Sweet Baby Jesus 6.5% Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter

DuClaw Brewing Company first opened in 1996 in Bel Air, MD. Today, they have an ever growing list of unique brews. They are known for their creative beer names, and this one does not disappoint. Sweet Baby Jesus was released mid-December 2012. This seasonal porter is brewed with Fuggle and Goldings hops and a variety of grains including pale, chocolate, crystal, black, and brown malts, as well as roasted barley.

Appearance

jet black, opaque, minimal head

Aroma

peanut butter – salty, roasted peanut butter

Taste

peanut butter dominates at first – like that powdered peanut butter – then the malts take over, ends with dark chocolate notes – the sweet maltiness lingers at the end; let this one warm up to let the flavors come forward even more

Mouthfeel

a little thin, but the carbonation is spot-on

Overall

This is my kind of dessert. A religious experience, perhaps? You decide. But as DuClaw says, this one will make you “exclaim the name!”

If you like this beer, definitely try Spring House Brewing Company’s (Conestoga, PA)  Big Gruesome Peanut Butter Chocolate Stout (or Lil’ Gruesome Peanut Butter and Jelly Stout!).
