Magic Hat Brewing Company Snow Roller, a 6.2% ABV Hoppy Brown Ale

Appearance Dark amber with tan head.
Aroma Malt sweetness; piney, citrusy hops.
Taste Toffee, biscuit, nutty notes with bitter citrus hops.

Overall Delicious! I love brown ales, and this twist on the style is quite tasty, especially after shoveling snow!

Magic Hat Brewing Company tells the story: “Winter calls for walls of white and the Snow Roller begins his work. Riding in on wicked winds, he dusts the naked trees and covers the brown barren fields that gasp a bitter breath at the touch of snow. No place is left free of flurry by his icy surf, save for those gathered together in good spirits. Bundle up and let the Snow Roller take your soul for a roll.”

Snow Roller, Magic Hat’s winter seasonal is a hoppy brown ale that combines dark malts with piney, citrusy American hops. A “snow roller” is a natural phenomenon that occurs in Vermont where winds pick up a fresh dusting of snow and ice across an open field, creating a roll, like a tumbleweed.

The strong citrus and pine notes you typically get from an American IPA are balanced by the chocolate, toffee, caramel, and nutty notes typical of an English brown ale. Snow Roller is brewed with Pale, Victory, Chocolate, Caramel 40L, and Caramel 120L malts along with Apollo and CTZ hops. The hops are added using a hop bursting technique late in the brewing process allowing them to stand out among the dark malt profile.
