Steph’s New Brew Review: Pullman Pilsner

Steph’s New Brew Review: Pullman Pilsner

South County Brewing Company Pullman Pilsner, a 5% ABV Bohemian Pilsner

Appearance Clear pale golden color with creamy white head.
Aroma Clean, malty, subtle spice.
Taste Complex malt with spicy hop notes.
Mouthfeel Medium-bodied with medium carbonation.
Overall Fresh, clean, and crisp.

South County Brewing, owned by JR Heaps, is located in Fawn Grove, PA, less than a mile from the Maryland border.  The brewery opened on July 1, 2011, and the tasting room is open to the public for tastings, drafts, and beer to go. Food can be purchased from Mill House Grill, located right next door.

JR’s brewing experience began as many new craft brewers do, with homebrewing. He was brewing all grain by his third batch and used a SABCO system by his fifth batch. He went to brewing school at the Siebel Institute in Chicago, and has brewed with many friends in the industry including Bavarian Bavarian (which sadly is now closed), Tröegs Brewing Company and Spring House Brewing Company.

Consistency and product quality are very important to JR. The brew system – made of German steel, built in Slovenia, and sold as Italian – is a 15-barrel steam semi-automated brewhouse that has allowed JR to brew more beer, brew more efficiently and sustainably, and also expand distribution.

Pullman Pilsner is a Bohemian style lager sold in 4-packs of pounder cans. The beer is well-balanced and crushable. It was first released on June 24, 2016. There’s only 150 cases of this deliciousness available, so don’t miss out!

  1. Love Micros

Subscribes to extremely unethical business practices. JR Heaps, the proprietor of South County Brewing, took substantial loans totaling tens of thousands of dollars from friends and family to build his business and has not, nor will not, pay those loans back. A true shyster.
