Steph’s New Brew Review: Out of Your Gourd

Redhook Brewery Out of Your Gourd, a 5.8% ABV, 20 IBU Pumpkin Porter

Appearance Dark brown with reddish hues; fluffy tan head.
Aroma Roasted malts; sweet maple syrup.
Taste Bitter chocolate, roasted malts, maple syrup; spices are subtle.
Mouthfeel Full-bodied; creamy.
Overall I appreciate that the roasted malt flavors dominate over the pumpkin pie spices. This is a comforting beer for the colder temperatures.

Redhook Brewery, one of America’s first “craft” breweries, was founded in 1981 by Gordon Bowker and Paul Shipman out of the energy and spirit of the early 1980’s in Seattle, WA.

The original brewery was located in a former transmission shop in the Ballard neighborhood, and the current breweries are located in Woodinville, WA and Portsmouth, NH.

Out of Your Gourd Pumpkin Porter is a dark, chestnut brown ale brewed with pureed pumpkin. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger are added in the whirlpool, and maple syrup is added during fermentation. Northern Brewer hops add a lightly-hopped character to this full-bodied, rich, and roasty beer.

Redhook’s Out of Your Gourd Pumpkin Porter is available in 6 and 12- packs in 12 ounce bottles and individual 22 ounce bottles from August through Halloween. If you find the seasonal on tap, check out the cleaver-shaped tap handle as a nod to pumpkin carving.
