Victory Brewing Company is bringing back an old-world, once forgotten beer style and adding their own modern twist. Dating back to the 1500s, the Gose style was more common at one time, but forgotten after World War II. It was brewed mostly in East Germany, and the wheat was unavailable for beer production after the war.

Gose is a complex beer style. It is brewed with about 50% wheat malt, an addition of coriander and salt, and the addition of lactobacillus bacteria to sour the beer during fermentation. Due to the high percentage of wheat and sourness, it is often compared to the Berliner Weisse.

Recently, many U.S. breweries have introduced a Gose style beer to their line up. Victory’s version of this unique brew starts with a great malt body from Pilsner, Wheat, Torrified Wheat, and Acidulated malts, a clean fermentation, and a distinct tartness from the use of lactic acid and lactobacillus. Cherries and cherry juice were added, contributing to the color, aroma, and flavor of the beer.

Victory Brewing Company describes this beer best, “A bold and bright step outside the norm, the flavors of a unique, old world German brewing process excite your senses with the sharp and sweet burst of fresh cherries. Effervescent and sublime, this session ale has an enticing cherry-fruit character. European tradition and American ingenuity come together in the truest sense as you Taste Victory in Kirsch Gose.”
