Steph’s New Brew Review: Green Chile Lager

Steph’s New Brew Review: Green Chile Lager

Tommyknocker Brewery Green Chile Lager, a 5.3% ABV lager brewed with Anaheim chiles

Appearance Golden; clear; tons of bubbles.
Aroma Fresh green chiles. Yum.
Taste Chiles. Chiles. Chiles.
Mouthfeel Light-bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall This beer is all about the chiles. The lager base offers a clean, crisp backdrop for the chiles, highlighting the flavor of the green chiles without the burn. For me, I miss the heat, but I adore the chile flavor.

First… what is a Tommyknocker? During the late 1800’s immigrant miners from England came to Colorado to work in the Clear Creek County gold and silver mines. The miners told tales of little elf-like beings who lived in the mines. These ‘Tommyknockers’ were heard singing and working, but rarely seen.

It is said that the mischievous Tommyknockers would dump over the miner’s lunch pails, blow out their candles and lamps, and hide picks and shovels, while the friendly Tommyknockers knocked on the walls of the mines to lead the miners to the richest ore veins. There are also many tales of Tommyknockers warning miners of impending danger and even saving the lives of some miners.

Tommyknocker Brewery, located on Miner Street in Idaho Springs, Colorado, honors the tales and superstitions of Tommyknockers in Clear Creek County by brewing quality handcrafted lagers and ales. Tommyknocker’s Green Chile Lager is a blend of hot and mild Anaheim chiles infused in a refreshing lager.
