Steph’s New Brew Review: Daliesque

Oceanside Ale Works Daliesque, a 6.2% ABV Barrel Aged Lambic Style Belgian Blonde

Appearance Hazy golden orange color with active bubbles.
Aroma Mild citrus notes, tart green apple.
Taste Fruity. Notes of peach, passionfruit, and melon. Tart.
Mouthfeel Medium-bodied, gently sour.
Overall Exotic! Delicious! Wish I would have bought more bottles.

Founded in 2005 by a local teacher and firefighter, Oceanside Ale Works is located in Oceanside, California. Oceanside’s first brewery is also one of the few manual brew houses in the USA.

The crew at Oceanside Ale Works is inspired by European brewing traditions, as well as West Coast brewers. The core set of beers include Pier View Pale Ale, San Luis Rey Red Ale, Buccaneer Blonde, and American Strong Ale.

The award winning brewery is committed to innovation, creating unique brews like Up A Kriek‬, a cherry sour belgian blonde that was just recently bottled and released. This beer has been rated the #1 sour/wild ale and the #44 overall beer on ratebeer.com.

Owner Mark Purciel is also known for mixing multiple styles of beer in the same glass. For example, last year he concocted a “beerbucha,” a combination of beer and kombucha.

Daliesque is a Belgian-style blonde ale brewed with 40% wheat. The beer was fermented in open vessels then transferred to Johannesburg Riesling wine barrels. The brew is later bottled in wax-dipped bottles.

The beer label is a nod to Salvador Dali’s The Ghost of Vermeer of Delft Which Can Be Used As a Table. The painting makes reference to The Art of Painting by Johannes Vermeer, a famous 17th century work in which a painter, thought to be a self-portrait of Vermeer, is depicted with his back to the viewer in distinctive costume.

In the painting, the man’s leg serves as a table holding a bottle and glass. On the beer label, the glass is in the man’s hand.

While this beer may have been inspired by a piece of art, the beer itself is a work of art.
