Steph’s New Brew Review: Cappuccino Stout

Lagunitas Brewing Company Cappuccino Stout, a 9.2% ABV Imperial Stout

Lagunitas Brewing Company was founded in 1993 by Tony Magee on the stove of his kitchen. He then moved to a small building down the street in Forest Knolls, CA where he brewed for 8 months until the brewery was plagued with septic issues. After that, Lagunitas moved to the current location in Petaluma, CA.

Tony continued to work his full time job during the first 5 years of Lagunitas. He designed all the Lagunitas labels himself. Until a few years ago, he also wrote all the recipes from scratch himself. He’s always trying to show personality and present something new.

Lagunitas has been one of the fastest growing breweries in the United States. During the last few years, the brewery went through a $14 million expansion, including a new brew house that allows them to brew 8 batches a day. The ultimate production capacity of Lagunitas is 1 million barrels.

Sebastopol’s Hardcore Coffee, located just up the road from Lagunitas in Petaluma, provided the coffee beans for Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout. There is one pound of their hard core coffee in every barrel of the brew. The beans were freshly ground, then dropped into the brew kettle and whirlpool, giving the beer a deep coffee flavor complemented by a deeper beer flavor. Cascade and Centennial hops add dimension to this “breakfast beer.”
