President Thomas Jefferson said, “Beer, if drunk in moderation, softens the temper, cheers the spirit and promotes health.” Join the Young Friends at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania for an evening of exploring beer throughout US history, from 200 year-old recipes to mid-century advertisements to the brews of today!
On Thursday, April 9, 2015 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM, the Young Friends of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP) is hosting its spring event that will celebrate the history beer and brewing in the Greater Philadelphia area. The event will feature local breweries, beer tastings, and will be held in HSP’s historic building at 13th and Locust in Philadelphia.
Attendees will have the opportunity to view a special selection of documents and items from HSP’s collection of over 21 million items. The selection will be connected to brewing and items will range from coasters to nineteenth century beer recipes. There will also be a raffle for prize packages.
This event allows attendees to physically interact with the original documents in HSP’s research library, network, and be a part of this city’s rich and distinct history. All proceeds from the event goes towards HSP’s Adopt a Collection Program to preserve important collections.
Guests will enjoy a scavenger hunt, hors d’oeuvres, and beer provided by Crooked Eye Brewery, Yards Brewing Company, and Yuengling.
Crooked Eye Brewery will serve up two delicious beers, Yards Brewing Company will have Ales of the Revolution: Tavern Ale, Ales of the Revolution: Tavern Porter, and Ales of the Revolution: Tavern Spruce on hand, and Yuengling will serve Summer Wheat, Light Lager, Dark Brewed Porter, and Lord Chesterfield Ale.
Prizes will be awarded for the scavenger hunt winner, and everyone can enter the raffle for a chance to win items provided by Barnes Foundation, Chemical Heritage Foundation, City Tavern, Historic Philadelphia, Knead Bagels, Pennsylvania Ballet, Philadelphia History Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia Orchestra and more!
Tickets are $25 ($30 at the door) and are available for purchase here or by calling (215) 732-6200 ext. 243. Space is limited. Must be 21 or over to attend. Proceeds support the Adopt a Collection program at HSP.
