A Few of My Favorite Things: Bacon and Brew HaHa at Appalachian Brewing

On a hot Sunday afternoon in Harrisburg, the cool beers were slinging with a happy side of the best thing possible…bacon.

Chutney

At Appalachian Brewing Company’s Bacon and Brew HaHa, several breweries and homebrewers met on site with various foodies to cater a well stocked event to benefit a local family. The price of entry was $30, but all proceeds went to benefit Elliott’s New Wheels, making sure the family of a heroic boy born with cerebral palsy can afford their new wheelchair-accessible van to get him around town.

The available beers included:

By Primitive Brewing Company
(Beer Busters alum Chris Harvey)

  • Wolverine’s Revenge Watermelon Wheat
  • Dynamic Duo White IPA

By Pierce Brewing Company
(Beer Busters alum Dean Pierce)

Bar Gifts
  • Darkside of the Farmhouse Black Saison
  • El Dorado IPA

By Pizza Boy

  • Rye Beer Sucks! Rye IPA

By Tonkin Brewing Company

  • Double IPA
  •  Berliner Weisse
  • Rye Saison

By Battlefield Brew Works

  • Mandarina Pale Ale
  • Red Circle Ale

By Dirty Deeds Brewing

  • Fluffer Nutter Porter
  • Socrates’ Choice Pale Ale

To compliment the beers, the event featured several tables of bacon-inspired recipes from local enthusiasts. Offerings included bacon-wrapped chestnuts, bacon apple chutney, bacon mac and cheese, bacon toffee bars, bacon potato salad, and local homemade ice cream.

Raffle tickets were sold that featured prizes including a gift certificate to Snitz Creek Brewery, tickets to see the Zac Brown Band in Hershey, and various shirts and pint glasses from different local breweries.

No beer charity event would be complete without a little friendly competition. Everyone in attendance was given two tickets to vote for their favorite treats. Tied for first place were the Tonkin Double IPA and Berliner weisse, followed by the Dirty Deeds Fluffer Nutter Porter.

According to Elliott’s mother, Lisa, she’d like this event to be an annual gathering of the local community. For those who would like to give to their worthy cause, donations can be made here.
